On April 29th and 30th, KidsBuild 2011 was presented by the YouthVisions Committee of The Boston Society of Architects and was hosted by the Institute of Contemporary Art. My first opportunity to cover this event was in 2009. It was an honor to be invited back to volunteer my photography services. From high-rise condos and hotels, to stadiums, theaters and the Donald McKay School, to bridges, yacht clubs and aquariums,it was another extraordinary display of extremely bright and imaginative children!
What is KidsBuild? Children ranging in age from approximately 6 to 15 years of age engage in the process of building a fictional city. They apply for building permits, develop a design, and construct the building they envision. All materials utilized to construct the buldings are donated by local businesses like shoe boxes, cups, tape and more. Architectural firms recycle samples from their design libraries - a pinch of "green" practice sprinkled throughout the land.
