The Mayor's Office of Arts, Tourism & Special Events put out a call to photographers for Assignment: 1 Day in Boston. Those selected were tasked with capturing the spirit of Boston on Patriot's Day. It was my honor to be selected as one of the photographers. Select images are being featured in the Mayor's Gallery as well as galleries on the 2nd and 8th floors of City Hall from May 25th through the month of June.
I started my day with Paul Revere's Ride. The National Lancers Foundation, an organization dedicated to preserving our rich historical foundation, performed the re-enactment of this momentous event. The lighthearted twist for today's ride; a quick stop at Mike's Pastry before heading out to warn that the "British are Coming".
My journey continued with a stroll through Boston Common, the Public Garden, and then down to the Boston Marathon Finish Line area. I was surprised to see how much landscape renovation was happening around the main fountain on Boston Common and wonder what they have in store. At the Public Gardens, lines formed to catch a ride on the Swan Boats. The majestic willows created curtains of green blowing in the breeze, revealing other natural treasures beyond its veil from time to time.
As I ventured down Boylston Street to the Marathon finish area, yellow stripes running down the street are not dividing lines, they're the signature schoolbuses awaiting their gladiators. After a 26-mile trek, the pain of the runners is palpable, some collapsing and others refusing to succumb to their demons from the road. Taking center stage is the enormous sense of pride that permeates the air around you from both the runners and those cheering for them. The pain fades away. The achievement has staying power - the eternal memory.
